Designer Status: Relationship Marketing
Building relationships with one's customers has been a long-standing trademark in successful marketing techniques. As a way to promote brand loyalty and awareness, companies are becoming more and more savvy at finding creative means to get customers more involved, and thus more loyal to the brand. Companies are often creating such promotions from a grass-roots effort, with virtually none--if any advertising. The focus on relationships lends way to community and the corporations embarking on such techniques are tying together individuals with common interests and keeping them around much longer.
For example, this past Saturday LEGO launched an initiative to bring their fans into the creative process by actually giving them the opportunity to create their very own sets online to later be able to purchase and build. Customers who opt to turn into designer status will even be able to post their specific set creations on the site for other LEGO fans to purchase and build. Fan-built sets even have the opportunity to become a part of the LEGO line... Just just another way a company is keeping it's product both relevant for old fans and exciting for new consumers.
